Today, we’re announcing that we have hit a major milestone in India. First Solar has become the first thin film PV modules manufacturer to ship 1 GW (DC) of PV solar capacity to India.
The growth of thin film technology in India is highly beneficial for the region. Thin film modules today have higher conversion efficiency and requires less land per MW, compared to polysilicon-based modules. In fact, First Solar’s technology advantage is particularly pronounced in the hot and humid climate of India. Over the past four years, our advanced thin film PV modules have a proven its superior energy yield by delivering 5-9% more energy compared to polysilicon based modules in India.
Our technology roadmap has us on a path to even greater conversion efficiencies, which will enable solar plants to be even more competitive against conventional energy sources.
With approximately 300 days of sunshine annually, a target of 100 GW of solar capacity by 2022 and significant governmental support, India is primed to become a worldwide solar leader. Having been present in India since 2011, we look forward to continuing to grow the thin film solar energy market within India.
